We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Operations Manager to lead our Special Projects Division. This role requires a dynamic leader who can manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring operational excellence, client satisfaction, and profitability.  The role requires building and maintaining relationships in the market, driving pursuit strategy and pursuing new projects. The Operations Manager will oversee project teams, maintain client relationships, and drive the successful execution of construction projects from pre-construction through closeout.

Responsibilities

Business Development & Client Relations

  • Identify and pursue new project opportunities, particularly in target markets or sectors.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships, acting as a trusted advisor and point of contact.
  • Attend industry events, networking opportunities, and client meetings to enhance the company’s market presence.
  • Lead or support proposal development, including RFP responses, presentations, and negotiations.
  • Analyze market trends and competitor activity to inform business development strategies.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to develop growth strategies and identify emerging markets.
  • Assist in refining the company’s value proposition, leveraging project success stories to attract new business.

Project Leadership & Management

  • Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of multiple projects within the division.
  • Manage project scope, budget, and schedules to meet client and company objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, quality standards, and company policies.
  • High level of expertise and involvement leading preconstruction and estimating processes to effectively pursue and plan for new projects.
  • Ensure project scope, schedule, and budget align with client expectations and contractual obligations.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (estimating, preconstruction, operations) to deliver successful project outcomes.
  • Address project challenges and implement solutions to maintain client satisfaction and project profitability.

Team Development & Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop project managers, superintendents, and other team members.
  • Foster a collaborative and results-driven work environment.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback.

Financial Oversight

  • Manage divisional P&L, ensuring profitability and financial health of projects.
  • Monitor project budgets, forecasts, and change orders.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality or safety.

Client & Stakeholder Relations

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships to ensure satisfaction and repeat business.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients and stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Negotiate contracts, resolve conflicts, and ensure successful project delivery.

Process Improvement & Strategic Planning

  • Develop and implement operational strategies to improve efficiency and project outcomes.
  • Identify areas for process improvements and implement best practices across the division.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership on long-term strategic planning for the division.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 8-10 years of experience in construction management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of construction processes, contracts, and financial management.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects under $20 million concurrently.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in construction management software (e.g., Procore, Bluebeam, or similar).
  • Ability to make decisions quickly and accurately
  • Ability to communicate at all levels

Our good faith estimate of the compensation range for this opportunity is a base salary of $210,000 - $270,000 if based in the Los Angeles market. Individual pay decisions will vary based upon the experience and qualifications of the applicant. This range is based upon Los Angeles market rates and determined by considering many factors such as external market salary survey data, internal data for comparable roles, and the operational and budgetary objectives of the company. Suffolk also offers a comprehensive benefits package as part of its overall compensation strategy.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time; talk or hear; perform fine motor, hand and finger skills in the use of a keyboard, telephone, or writing. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; and reach with arms and/or hands. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee will spend their time in an office environment with a quiet to moderate noise level. Job site walking.
