Position Overview:

As we continue to grow and expand our operations, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced Vice President, Environmental Health and Safety to join our leadership team. The Vice President, Environmental Health and Safety will play a critical role in establishing and maintaining a world-class safety culture within Suffolk. Reporting directly to and working closely with the EVP, National Operations/Environmental Health and Safety, the VP, Environmental Health and Safety will lead the day-to-day development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety programs to ensure the well-being of our employees, trade partners, and the communities in which we operate. This position requires a strategic leader who can collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive safety excellence throughout the organization.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

 

  1. Leadership and Strategy:
    • Work hand-in-hand with the EVP, National Operations/Environmental Health and Safety to develop and implement a comprehensive safety strategy aligned with the company's goals and objectives.
    • Provide strategic direction and oversight to the safety department, ensuring a proactive and preventative approach to safety management.
    • Collaborate with executive leadership to integrate safety practices into overall business operations.

 

  1. Implement Data-Driven Safety Measures:
    • Collaborate closely with Suffolk’s Data Department to build a data-driven strategy to improve safety metrics and predictability.
    • Utilize data analytics and predictive analytics to identify trends, potential hazards, and areas for improvement in safety performance.
    • Implement data-driven strategies and measures to proactively address safety issues and enhance overall safety outcomes.
    • Explore, recommend, and implement new safety technologies and tools to enhance safety measures on site.

 

  1. Policy Development and Compliance:
    • Establish and enforce safety policies and procedures that comply with local, state, and federal regulations as well as industry best practices.
    • Stay abreast of emerging safety regulations and trends and adjust company policies accordingly.

 

  1. Training and Education:
    • Develop and deliver training programs to educate employees at all levels on safety protocols, hazard recognition, and risk mitigation.
    • Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement regarding safety practices.

 

  1. Incident Investigation and Reporting:
    • Lead investigations into safety incidents, near misses, and accidents, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
    • Maintain accurate and timely reporting of safety metrics to executive leadership and regulatory agencies as required.

 

  1. Risk Management:
    • Conduct risk assessments for projects and operations, implementing strategies to minimize and mitigate potential hazards.
    • Collaborate with project teams to ensure safety considerations are integrated into project planning and execution.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • At least 15 years of EH&S or Operations-related experience with a minimum of 5 years in an executive/management/leadership position.
  • Operational experience working with Police, Fire and EMS or other emergency response services.
  • Proven track record of successfully implementing safety programs in large-scale construction projects.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire others through direct and in-direct influence
  • In-depth knowledge of safety regulations, standards, and industry best practices.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate safety goals into actionable plans.
  • Experience with incident investigation and root cause analysis.
  • Energetic, enthusiastic self-starter with excellent verbal and written communication skills and an eye for detail.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time; talk or hear; perform fine motor, hand and finger skills in the use of a keyboard, telephone, or writing. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; and reach with arms and/or hands. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee will spend their time in an office environment with a quiet to moderate noise level. Job site walking.
